The fates of Makatae-Witko, a very young native American, destined by signs to become his tribe's next chief, and a cowboy, Diego Murrieta, fleeing away from a murder accusation, intersect in a barren town called Stoner.

The young man has been sent on a mission to provide his worth by finding a solution to their tribe's land water crisis. Although uncertain and directionless, his journey is only motivated by his love for the chief's daughter. The cowboy, on the other hand, is on the hunt for a legendary gold vein but only because he came across a map, not because he is a gold seeker. The desolate Stoner Town is a place overshadowed by a massive dam and populated by lost and dark souls. Despite their seemingly opposing goals, they discover that their fates are deeply connected and they ultimately find what they were truly seeking for—not only water or gold, but a deeper understanding of life's meaning.

Ródenas, Gabri

Gabri Ródenas is a writer, doctor in philosophy and professor at the Faculty of Audiovisual Communication of the University of Murcia. He is a regular contributor to Zenda and other academic and cultural media.

His works include La abuela que cruzó el mundo en una bicicleta (Urano, 2018), an international bestseller translated into a dozen languages, and El artificiero y la mariposa (Diana, grupo Planeta, 2022). El fabuloso destino de Makatae-Witko y Diego Murrieta (Edebé, 2024) is his debut in the universe of children and youth literature.
