EL SÍ DE LAS NIÑAS

The Maidens' Consent(El sí de las niñas), a play written in 1801, is a satirical commentary on the Spanish social norms of that time. The story begins in a convent with Francisca, a 16 year old girl, who is engaged to 59 year old Diego. Although it's her mother, Irene's wishes for her to marry Diego, Francisca is in love with a soldier named Carlos. Along with Francisca's maid, Rita's help, Carlos and Francisca fight to be together. A story which explores the pursuit of true love and goes against all the odds.

Foreword, introduction and notes by José Francisco Ruiz Casanova, a Spanish Literature lecturer at Universidad Pompeu Fabra.
